ABOUT US
What is NCS?
NCS is the National Citizen Service, it is a programme aimed at young people to develop new skills and become more involved in their communities through volunteering and social action.
The first phase of NCS is the Personal Challenge where the young people focus on team building. This includes hiking, team sports, rock climbing and camping.
The second part is Team Challenge where you learn new skills whilst staying at a residential accommodation (often universities) and learn to cook for yourself! Drama, Photography, Media, Sports, Enterprise, Art and Music are the different skills that the participants learn, the young people then share the skill with a community organisation and finish the week with a showcase performance.
The third phase of the programme is Real Challenge, whihc is all about Social Action. The teams meet a community partner, find out about them and the issues that they are dealing with and plan what they can do to help. The teams pitch for funding to a panel of investors (much like Dragons' Den) and share their ideas. Once the funding is gained the young people create a volunteer day for the community partner and finish the programme with their NCS Graduation.
A message from Alfie
Hey there, My name's Alfie, and I did work experience on the NCS programme for a week. I went to Croydon College on Tuesday the 15th of November, 2016, and worked with the Associate Mentors for the day. We helped to make the programme run as smoothly as possible and worked on this website a bit. We also participated in a vlogging workshop, which was great fun. There's not really much else to be said, but the day was an absolute blast, and thanks to all the AMs for making it that way. Good luck in the future guys, and thanks again, Alfie Scott |
