NCS visits elderly Home
On Wednesday 16th November, when Croydon College were on the #NCSTheChallenge, part of the associate mentors and I visited team Edwards (the media group) at the red court care home for the elderly. Whilst we were there, we spoke to some of the people who were living at the home and on behalf of the NCS participants and Associate mentors I have to say that the experience was really intriguing and enjoyable. Peter is a resident at the home and he is one of two people team Edwards interviewed. This is how his interview went…. The first question he got asked was to tell us a bit about himself. He replied with “I am currently 91. When I was a child I went to an all-boys school and when I was growing up I done a lot of drawing and painting but gradually the amount of artwork I do now has been decreased because I am less able to do that much now”. Do you have any life experiences? One of the participants asked Tom. He said. “I was in the army fighting in the war for 4 years starting from the year of 1942 to 1945 from the age of 18. When I was in the army I drove a small tank with 3 other people”. The last question which was asked was….. What do you like about the home? He said “I like people visiting me such as family and friends; also I like people asking me about my life”. The second person interviewed was a lady called Betty. She got asked the same questions and here are her answers: 1.“When I was a child I was evacuated in the blitz and I didn’t really understand what was really going on then but as I grew older I started to figure out why I had to move”. 2.“The things I like about living in this home are that all the staff is ever so nice and I like it when people come in and I get to meet them”. The last question was changed to… What do you like doing? She said “there’s not much I can do nowadays however I do love to read and watch crime thrillers and horrors”. After that interview we took some pictures (displayed on our webpage) and then we left, when we did leave we could tell from the elderly people’s faces that they had enjoyed meeting us as well as us meeting them.
